Marina Pendleton is a Texas-born, Oklahoma-raised, world-traveling fiddler, mandolin player, and vocalist. Her music is inspired by many musical traditions, including Bluegrass, Texas-style fiddle, Western Swing, and Classical violin. Marina recently performed and recorded with Pittsburgh, PA-area bluegrass bands and played regular shows with multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter Jim Scott in the duo Pendleton & Scott. Marina currently plays country and bluegrass in the Houston, Texas area.
Marina picked up her first (tiny) fiddle at age two with the purpose of studying classical violin. A few years later, fiddling legend Jana Jae discovered Marina and her sister Emma Jane performing a classical duet at a Christmas party. With Ms. Jae's encouragement, dad Scott dusted off his guitar, mom Virginia picked up mandolin, and together they formed the Pendleton Family Fiddlers.
Marina's love of music flourished during eight intense years of performing with her family band. She developed her skills on the mandolin, fiddle, lead and harmony vocals, and performed nearly 600 live shows before graduating high school. Highlights from those years include playing onstage with Lyle Lovett, Mark O'Connor, and Byron Berline, performing at galas honoring Garth Brooks, Vince Gill, and Toby Keith, and making many TV appearances, local and national. Marina also won state fiddle titles in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado, and placed in the top 2 at the 2008 Walnut Valley Old Time Fiddle Championship in Winfield, KS.
Marina studied classical violin through college in Oklahoma, but never lost her love of fiddle music. She won the 2017 Pennsylvania State Fiddle Championship and the 2017 & 2018 PA State Mandolin Championship. She played the FIDDLE part in Front Porch Theatricals' professional production of Steve Martin and Edie Brickell's bluegrass musical Bright Star in Pittsburgh during the 2019 season. She won the Bluegrass Fiddle division at the 84th Annual Galax Old Fiddlers Convention in Galax, VA in August 2019; placed in the top 3 at the Walnut Valley Old Time Fiddle Championship in Winfield, KS in September 2019; and earned runner-up at the Texas State Fiddle Championship in November 2019.
